Synopsis

Matilda arrives alone in the mountains of Tuscany for an art retreat, a gift from Kelsey, her fiancée of ten years. When she discovers the retreat is closed, the disappointment brings their already fragile relationship to a breaking point.

With no plans and nowhere she needs to be, Matilda joins a tour with Guy, an American visiting the area to learn about his grandfather’s death during World War II. As they explore the town and surrounding countryside together, their connection becomes an attraction she hadn’t anticipated, raising questions about her identity, about love, and about the life she thought she wanted.

Then Kelsey unexpectedly arrives in Italy, determined to make their relationship work. Caught between a relationship she has just ended and one she has barely begun, Matilda must consider what she wants from each of them — and how her actions may define her for the rest of her life.

Director’s Statement

There are three reasons I’m making A Love Triangle Has Two Sides.

First, I want to make a film that specifically captures a bisexual experience — something few films aim to do. I am bisexual, I have been married for ten years, and to the world I appear straight. I am interested in what happens when desire complicates identity and the stories we tell ourselves.

Second, I want to make a narrative love story that still feels grounded in the real world, almost like a documentary. We will use actors and non-actors. Some scenes will be scripted and others will, for lack of a better term, document a real conversation happening in front of the camera. Yes, there is a screenplay and a narrative plan, but there is also room for something unexpected to become part of the film.

And finally, I want to make a movie in the dramatic mountains of Tuscany. For the past several years, I have brought film students to Barga, Italy, through a study abroad program I lead as a professor. In that time I have developed relationships with artists, historians, and people throughout the community who are now helping us tell this story. Barga is not just the setting. Its artists, its centuries-old buildings, its WWII history, and the landscape itself are built into the plot.

These three things—the bisexual love story, the blending of fiction and documentary in a romance, and this specific location in Italy—are what I believe make this film different, and I hope they come together to create something that moves audiences emotionally, challenges them intellectually, and stays with them long after the film ends.
